Dakar – Tambacounda railway link + Logistics hub

Dakar – Tambacounda railway link + Logistics hub

The general objective of the project is to contribute to the development of multimodal transport networks in order to promote the socio-economic development of the regions, as well as the evacuation of minerals and the movement of goods and people at a lower cost throughout Senegal.

The specific objectives of the project:

  • open up the regions of Eastern Senegal and Casamance with the transport of products (mining and food) to and from Casamance as well as the sub-region;
  • promote national fertilizer production with phosphate mines already in operation;
  • promote the mass transport of agricultural products such as Niébé, peanut, wheat and millet;
  • ensure the opening up of the sylvopastoral area of northeastern Senegal, conducive to livestock and milk production;
  • promote the return to land of populations with the cessation of the rural exodus;
  • promote the movement of people, goods and internal exchanges in both directions
  • decongest and limit the costs of maintaining road infrastructure (300 trucks per day currently use the Dakar-Tambacounda axis);
  • take advantage of the investments of the TER, with the use of the 36 km of standard double lanes, to extend the tracks from Diamniadio to Thiès and to use the Regional metropolitan component of the “R” of the TER;
  • use the city of Thiès as the focal point for the interoperability of the TER line, which will allow the use of tracks for both freight and the passenger;
  • increase the market share of freight transport whose current transport forecasts for commissioning in 2022 are:
  1. Targeted market share for freight to Mali: 2.9 Million Tons; (in 2022 capture 50% of the tonnage transported to Mali);
  2. National Freight Traffic: 8.7 Million Tons per year which are broken down as follows:

AXIS THIES-DAKAR: ICS for 2 million, GCO for 800 thousand tons, DANGOTE for 1.5 million tons;
AXIS MATAM-SEMME-TAMBACOUNDA-DAKAR: with SOMIVA for 2 million tons;
AXIS POUT-THIES-TAMBACOUNDA: with DANGOTE for products bound for Mali for 1.2 Million Tons;
AXIS ZIGUINCHOR-TAMBACOUNDA-DAKAR: with products from Casamance via the Dry Port for 200 thousand tons;
AXE KEDOUGOU-TAMBACOUNDA-DAKAR: with the initial production of minerals in the Eastern Senegal region which is estimated at 1 Million tons.

  • pool the financial costs related to the operation of traffic and the maintenance of railway tracks;
  • promote energy savings with a reduction in environmental pollution.
